Ruby

Ruby is a very sweet mare, of advanced years (probably around 20), who has been passed through many owners and neglected frequently throughout her life, culminating in her abandonment on the Caldeira sometime during last winter. A local farmer from Pedro Miguel, Luis Filipe Vargas, alerted us to her whereabouts in January but only managed to see her once from a distance since the terrain is very difficult for searching on foot and impossible by vehicle. In early June, Luis Filipe saw her again and alerted us immediately. She had reappeared near the radio masts – the highest point on the island. 

 

 

This time after successfully locating her and seeing her condition we decided she needed to be brought down by trailer, as her feet were in no shape for a long walk (our preferred method of transportation, as it is less scary and gives us plenty of time to bond).

A Ruby é uma égua muito dócil, de idade avançada (provavelmente uns 20 anos), que passou por muitos proprietários e foi negligenciada, culminando com o seu abandono na Caldeira durante o Inverno passado. Em janeiro, um agricultor de Pedro Miguel, Luís Filipe Vargas, alertou-nos para esta situação, tendo avistado a Ruby à distância. No entanto, não conseguiu aproximar-se dela, dado as condições difíceis do terreno - era impossível o uso de um veículo e ir a pé seria extremamente complicado.  

 

No início de junho, o senhor Luís Filipe voltou a vê-la e alertou-nos imediatamente. Ela reapareceu perto das antenas de rádio – o ponto mais alto da ilha.

Desta vez, depois de a localizar com sucesso e ver seu estado, decidimos que ela precisava ser trazida para a Ninovan de trailer, pois os seus cascos não estavam em condições para uma longa caminhada - o nosso “meio de transporte” preferido, pois é menos assustador e também nos dá tempo para criar laços. 

Ninovan does not have a trailer of our own, so we started asking around for help. It was Luis Filipe who inevitably jumped into action, picked her up and brought her to Ninovan! A special thank you to Luis Filipe!

 

Since then she has had her poorly deformed feet trimmed by our farrier, Elias Pinheiro (Thank you Elias!), and her abscesses treated. During this time she has been living with our “oldies” Lanza, Zinzi and Mr Bones. 

 

Ruby has seemed to become comfortable enough on her feet now to go down with the younger herd, so we are figuring out how to make that happen. With them she will get more movement, which will her blood circulation in her hooves and encourage further healing.

 

As part of her recovery she has been put on a diet of herbs and supplements, to strengthen her system and treat her chronic low grade laminitis.

Como a Ninovan não tem um trailer, pedimos ajuda e, uma vez mais, o sr. Luís Filipe entrou em ação e trouxe-a para a Ninovan! Um agradecimento muito especial para ele!

Agora, já na Ninovan, na companhia dos nossos “velhotes” Lanza, Zinzi e Mr. Bones, a Ruby já teve os seus deformados cascos aparados pelo nosso ferrador, Elias Pinheiro (Obrigado Elias!), e os seus abcessos tratados. 

Neste momento, a Ruby parece estar suficientemente confortável para se juntar aos cavalos mais jovens – ainda estamos a ver como fazê-lo. Junto a eles, ela mexer-se-á mais, o que aumentará a circulação sanguínea nos seus cascos e irá agilizar a sua cura.

Como parte da sua recuperação, ela tem uma dieta de ervas e suplementos, para fortalecer o seu sistema imunitário e tratar a sua laminite crónica.
