We have also been involved in a few other cases in the last few months, and now with theHOT weather we are called most weeks by tourists who see animals suffering in the heat without shelter or water.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP: carry an empty bucket and a few 6L water bottles around with you in your car and pour away!
Flamengos:
Two seemingly abandoned horses wandering free on the road above Flamengos - we were able to move them away from the road, for their safety and for the safety of other road users. We contacted the GNR, who contacted the owner and eventually we heard that the owner had given them away. Now they seem to be cared for, as they have been spotted grazing in a large field.
Castelo Branco
Does anyone remember Serrao? The little black pony in Castelo Branco which had a deep laceration on its neck (ca 8 cm) after being cut by the rope it was tethered on? Luckily at the time we had Mark Strong who was able to assist us with his Multi Radience Laser. The pony was treated three times per day until the wound began to heal on its own. Amazing!
Sadly the same thing has happened again. The GNR was notified and
has visited the owner and pony several times assuring themselves and us that the pony is being treated. The wound is beginning to heal, however - unfortunately the owner has decided it is best to cut off all of Serrao‘s mane so that now he no longer has protection from the flies.
Equines still have little to no protection in the Azores as they fall into a gray zone which means we have to fight for every inch of recognition. Equines are not removed from their owners for mistreatment, as they have nowhere to take them, and the laws are vague at best. Until we manage to create real awareness through hard work, patience and education - there will be no real change.

Também estivemos envolvidos em outros casos, nomeadamente, referentes aos problemas causados pelo clima QUENTE. Somos contactados regularmente por turistas que veem animais a sofrer com o calor, sem abrigo ou sem água.
SE QUISER AJUDAR: leve sempre no seu carro um balde e alguns garrafões de 6 litros com água para poder ajudar se for confrontado com uma situação similar!
Flamengos
Encontrámos dois cavalos, aparentemente
abandonados, vagueando pela estrada dos Flamengos. Conseguimos amarrá-los fora da estrada - para garantir a segurança dos animais e de quem utiliza a estrada. Contactámos a GNR, que contactou o
proprietário e ficámos a saber que, eventualmente, o proprietário tinha doado esses dois cavalos. Presentemente, os cavalos parecem estar a ser bem cuidados, pois foram vistos a pastar num grande
campo.
Castelo Branco
Alguém se lembra do Serrão? O pequeno pónei
preto de Castelo Branco que teve uma laceração profunda no pescoço (cerca de 8 cm), provocada pela corda com a qual estava amarrado? Felizmente, na época, a Ninovan contou com a ajuda do Mark
Strong e do seu Multi Radience Laser. O Serrão foi tratado com laser três vezes por dia até que a ferida começou a cicatrizar. Incrível!
Infelizmente, aconteceu novamente o mesmo ao Serrão. A GNR foi notificada, visitou o dono e o pónei várias vezes, e foi-nos garantido que o
pónei estava a ser tratado. A ferida estava a começar a sarar, mas o dono decidiu cortar a crina do Serrão… e ele ficou assim sem proteção contra as moscas.
Os equinos ainda têm pouca ou nenhuma proteção nos Açores. Os equinos não são retirados aos donos por maus-tratos, pois não existem locais oficiais para onde os levar… As leis são, na melhor das hipóteses, vagas, o que significa que temos de lutar por cada centímetro de reconhecimento. Até que se crie uma consciência real, através de trabalho árduo, paciência e educação, não haverá mudança real.
